Whole Foods to phase in Amazon’s palm-scanning payment service

Amazon announced last week that it plans to bring its palm-scanning Amazon One contactless payment system to Whole Foods Market, starting with eight stores in Seattle. With the technology, customers simply have their palms scanned to present their loyalty cards and provide payment. In addition to its use in stores, Amazon said the technology can ultimately be used to allow people to gain entry to places like stadiums and offices.

Customers can sign up for the service at a special kiosk in participating stores, and can enroll one palm or both. Customers can also link their Amazon One ID with their Amazon account to get their Prime member discount and benefits at Whole Foods.

Dilip Kumar, Amazon’s vice president of physical retail and technology, said in a blog post (as reported on Supermarket News) that the technology is available for license by other retailers, and that Amazon is “in active discussions with several potential customers.”
