Survey says Wegmans and H-E-B are best in class

We know that Walmart accounts for the most grocery dollars in the U.S., but according to a recent survey, the world’s largest retailer accounts for almost twice as much as second place Kroger. The survey, conducted by MarketForce and called “US Grocery Benchmark Study: Consumer Experiences and Competitive Benchmarks,” was based on answers from 6,555 consumers. It also found that Wegmans and H-E-B were the two brands most often considered “best in class” by customers.

When it comes to customer loyalty, Trader Joe’s and H-E-B ranked as the two best, with Wegmans and Sprouts Farmers Market also scoring well.

Ninety-percent of consumers selected Aldi as having the best “value for money.” Not surprisingly, Lidl also scored well.

Other insights from the study included the following:

  • More than two-thirds of customers shop at three or more grocery brands.
  • The primary drivers of shopper satisfaction are a problem-free experience, having a variety of products available, a clean store, and fast checkout.
  • The biggest problem cited by customers was out-of-stock items.
  • Almost two-thirds of shoppers use a grocery website or app.
  • More than six in 10 shoppers purchase generic brand products at least half the time.
