Walmart continues to dominate the share of dollars spent in the U.S. at grocery retailers, according to data from Numerator. The nation’s largest retailer holds a 21.4% market share over the 12-month period from July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2024.
Kroger is a distant second with an 8.9% share, followed by Costco (8.3%), Albertsons (5.5%), and Sam’s Club (4.3%).
Walmart also dominates the online grocery market, having captured a 37% share during the second quarter of 2024, according to the monthly Brick Meets Click/Mercatus Grocery Shopping Survey. The mass retailer’s share rose 150 basis points year over year, while supermarkets lost 250 basis points during the same timeframe.
Target finished the second quarter with 7% of ecommerce sales.
