The art and science of Wegmans from Supermarket News

David Goodman | May 24, 2013 |

I attended the Retail Brokers Network annual meeting in Las Vegas last Sunday, and in a breakout group focused on big box stores, Wegmans was mentioned. Then the meeting seemed to come to a halt. Those from the Northeast or Mid-Atlantic states started cooing about the store, saying that it was like no other supermarket in the world. And those not from a Wegmans state listened intently until they realized they were simply unlucky to have to shop in an inferior store, or so they were told.

A day after the meeting I came across a Supermarket News feature on Wegmans that begins with Founder Robert Wegman’s store philosophy and then spends many pages spelling out how the $6.6 billion company operates. It’s worth a read… Wegmans 101: Industry observers reflect upon the art and science of Wegmans.

Enjoy!
