Sam’s Club said that it plans to remodel all 600 of its locations in the next year, including the removal of checkout lanes. With no checkout lanes, shoppers will have to use the retailer’s Scan & Go app to pay and leave the store. And with AI technology, associates will not be needed to check receipts at the exit.
According to Sam’s Club, which is owned by Walmart, about one in three of its members already use the Scan & Go technology, and usage has increased more than 50% over the past three years. The company added that Gen Z and millennials account for half of their new member growth.
With a deepened commitment to AI and technology, Sam’s Club plans to connect more often and more effectively with its members.
“We’ve learned that connection is at the heart of every shopping journey, giving us confidence that experience will be a key differentiator for Sam’s Club going forward,” said Diana Marshall, executive vice president and chief experience officer.
The company added that digitally engaged members shop three times more frequently than those who are not, and those members renew at a rate that’s 10% higher than others.
