Data analytics firm Placer.ai named Kroger as 2023’s most popular grocery banner in the U.S. in terms of foot traffic. Placer’s end-of-year recap report said that Kroger and its banner locations captured 18.8% of annual grocery foot traffic.
Other top five grocery retailers included Publix (17%), Safeway (10.5%), Aldi (9.4%), and H-E-B (8.7%). Walmart Neighborhood Market, Meijer, Food Lion, Trader Joe’s and ShopRite rounded out the top 10. These 10 grocers comprised 42.6% of the total grocery visit share for 2023.
Placer’s report included the following insights:
- The median household income (HHI) for grocery shoppers was $73,900, compared to the national median of $69,500.
- Trader Joe’s had the highest HHI among shoppers at $97,500. ShopRite ($87,600) was second.
- Lower-income customers were more likely to seek out lower cost grocery alternatives like dollar stores.
