Placer data shows that Costco shoppers stay longest

Placer.ai foot traffic data from 2024 – shared exclusively with Supermarket News – revealed that stores with the largest physical footprints saw shoppers stay in their stores the longest. Costco led the way with shoppers remaining approximately 37-40 minutes per visit.

Walmart customers averaged 32-35 minutes and H-E-B, a supermarket chain with over 400 stores throughout Texas and New Mexico, averaged 26-27 minutes.

Dollar store customers spent about half the time (15-17 minutes) in store as those shopping at warehouse clubs (an average of 35-37 minutes).

From a year over year growth standpoint, Aldi was the leader. The discount grocer maintained double-digit customer traffic growth for 11 months of 2024. On the other hand, Albertsons experienced negative foot traffic growth for most of the year.
