Last week Piggly Wiggly, the popular supermarket chain mostly found in the South and Southeast, marked its entry into the Northeast with the opening of a store in Watertown, NY, which is about an hour north of Syracuse. The store is operated by GU Markets, an affiliate of C&S, which purchased 12 Tops Markets locations late last year. The other 11 stores have been converted to Grand Union supermarkets.
C&S currently licenses the Piggly Wiggly banner to over 600 independently-owned and operated supermarkets in 17 states. Although most are in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and the Carolinas, Piggly Wiggly stores can also be found in Ohio, West Virginia, Oklahoma, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois.
