Giant and ShopRite are once again the two dominant grocers in the Greater Philadelphia Market, as per the annual Market Issue of Food Trade News. Giant has a 15.94% market share (based on sales) and ShopRite has 14.29%.

The counties included in the market area include Philadelphia, Bucks, Montgomery, Delaware, Chester, Burlington, Camden, and Gloucester. When expanded to the entire Delaware Valley (adding New Castle County in Delaware and Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland, Hunterdon, Mercer and Salem Counties in New Jersey), ShopRite tops Giant by a 16.53% to 12.21% market share.

The study also includes information on several other markets from Connecticut to Central Pennsylvania.

In Greater Philadelphia, ShopRite ($54.7M) has higher sales per store than Giant ($34.6M) but Giant has 74 locations compared to 56 for ShopRite. Both supermarkets trail Wegmans in this category, which averages $84M per store at its 10 area locations. Costco is second at $61M per store.

Also on the list is Acme, which has a 9.25% market share and averages $30M in sales per store. Aldi has a 2.49% share and averages just under $10M per store. Whole Foods (including Amazon Fresh) has a 2.37% share, and further down the list are Redner’s Markets, Trader Joe’s, Weis Markets, and Save A Lot. Lidl didn’t make the top 20.

The top 10 in order of market share are Giant (including Heirloom Market), ShopRite (including Price Rite), Wawa, Acme, CVS, Walmart, Target, Wegmans, BJ’s Wholesale Club, and Aldi.

The sales volumes in the study include 100% of store sales for supermarkets, convenience stores, and drug chains. Sales for club stores, Target and Walmart are extrapolated to include comparable supermarket categories.
