DoorDash, largely known for restaurant food delivery, announced yesterday that it is planning to launch DoorPass, a grocery delivery service. Customers will be able to place orders with participating retailers at DoorDash.com or via the mobile app, and have their groceries delivered directly to their homes in as soon as an hour.
For a $9.99 monthly subscription fee, DashPass members will get unlimited deliveries and reduced service fees for orders of at least $12. Customers may also order groceries on a per-order basis for a $3.99 delivery fee, with no minimum order amount.
The DoorDash service will start with Smart & Final stores in major California markets, and with Meijer and Fresh Thyme Farmers Market in Chicago, Cincinnati, Milwaukee, Detroit and Indianapolis.
Expansion in the coming months is planned with Hy-Vee in the Midwest and Gristedes/D’Agostino in New York City.
DoorDash says that a selection of more than 10,000 products, including perishables, will be available for delivery.
Several retailers have already been using the DoorDash Drive white-label fulfillment solution for last-mile delivery, including Walmart, ShopRite and others, and the company provides meal delivery service for Wegmans and several other supermarkets.
