Amazon to abandon cashierless payments in grocery stores

David Goodman | Apr 03, 2024 |

Amazon announced that in a response to customer feedback it is discontinuing its “Just Walk Out” technology at Amazon Fresh grocery stores in the U.S. The “Just Walk Out” technology uses artificial intelligence to enable shoppers to take items off the shelf, walk out of the store, and have the bill charged directly to their Amazon account.

In a statement from Amazon’s Jessica Martin, the company said it had heard from customers “that while they enjoyed the benefit of skipping the checkout line with Just Walk Out, they also want the ability to easily find nearby products and deals, view their receipt as they shop, and know how much they saved while shopping throughout the store.”

Martin said that Amazon will focus on Dash Carts, its AI-powered shopping carts, “which allow customers all these benefits including skipping the checkout line.”

“Just Walk Out” technology will still be offered at Amazon Go stores, smaller format Amazon Fresh stores in the U.K., and third-party retailers.
