Amazon “quietly building a national grocery chain”

David Goodman | Mar 14, 2021 |

Bloomberg reported on Thursday that Amazon is “quietly building a national grocery chain,” saying that at least 28 Amazon Fresh supermarkets are in the works. The report claimed that Philadelphia is a target market, which is a poorly kept secret in Greater Philly real estate circles. (Here’s my blog from last October about Amazon grocery stores coming to Philly: Amazon Fresh coming to Philly and suburbs with digitally integrated supermarkets.)

On the same day that Bloomberg’s report came out, an Amazon spokesperson confirmed upcoming Amazon Fresh stores in Long Beach, CA; Woodland Park and Paramus, NJ; and Seattle and Bellevue, WA. Last Fall, Natalie Kostelni of the Philadelphia Business Journal reported that Amazon grocery stores were in the works locally for Philadelphia, Warrington, Bensalem and Havertown.

Amazon’s physical stores consist of 523 Whole Foods Market supermarkets, 29 Amazon 4-Star outlets, 26 Amazon Go convenience stores, 24 Amazon Books stores, 11 Amazon Fresh supermarkets, and seven Presented by Amazon pop-up locations in the U.S.
