The New York Post reported that Amazon has made bids for four Fairway Market stores. The stores are in Brooklyn and Pelham Manor, NY, and Woodland Park and Paramus, NJ. Fairway Market recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Two supermarket operators previously made bids on Fairway stores. Bogopa, which operates 26 Food Bazaar supermarkets in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, bid on the five Manhattan stores plus the Pelham Manor location and Bronx distribution center. Village Super Market, which owns and operates 30 ShopRite supermarkets in four states along with three Gourmet Garage specialty markets in New York City, also bid on the Manhattan stores and the distribution center.
As mentioned in a blog post last week (Amazon adding grocery formats in effort to dominate select markets), Amazon is developing a multi-pronged grocery store strategy to serve different kinds of shopping trips. The strategy includes Amazon Go, Amazon Go Grocery, and a yet-to-be-named supermarket chain that opens its first store in Southern California later this year.
Fairway currently operates 14 stores in New York City, Long Island, Westchester County, New Jersey and Connecticut.
