Grocery Outlet announced that it plans to acquire United Grocery Outlet, a discount grocer operating in the Southeast. The deal is expected to close in the second quarter of this year.
United Grocery Outlet, which is celebrating its 50th year in business, has 40 stores in Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky, and Virginia.
Grocery Outlet is headquartered in California and has about 460 stores in nine states, five in the Western U.S and four in the East, including Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The company expanded to the east coast in 2011 with the purchase of the Amelia’s grocery chain. Grocery Outlet’s original store opened in 1946 and sold military surplus at deep discount prices.
