Food World recently concluded that sales from Giant and ShopRite totaled more than 56% of the overall grocery market in the eight-county Philadelphia area during the 12-month period that ended March 31, 2022. According to the report, Giant had a 30% share of the market compared to a 26.6% share for ShopRite.
The eight counties include Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia in Pennsylvania, plus Burlington, Camden and Gloucester in New Jersey.
Acme, the dominant supermarket of yesteryear, had the third largest share at 18.62%. Here are some other findings from the Food World study.
- Amazon stores – which include Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods – had a 4.4% share of the market.
- When taking into account stores that sell more than just groceries (convenience stores and club stores, for example), Wawa ranked third behind Giant and ShopRite. Acme and CVS came in fourth and fifth, respectively.
- Giant and Wawa were the top two stores for grocery shoppers in Bucks, Chester and Montgomery Counties, while Giant and Acme were the top two for Delaware County. ShopRite and Acme topped the list for Philadelphia County.
