People ranked Wegmans Food Market as the top company for going above and beyond to create positive workplaces for their staff and the community at large. People partnered with workplace culture consultant Great Place to Work to analyze survey responses from more than five million employees, and selected Wegmans as the winner based on its level of care and concern for its employees, its communities, and the environment.

The winners were published in a list titled “100 Companies That Care.”

Wegmans was cited for its outstanding support of low-income and marginalized communities by securing them access to food, and for providing seniors with free rides to their stores and to medical appointments. In the past year, the chain donated more than 18 million pounds of food (valued at nearly $30 million) to local food banks and hunger relief agencies.

Wegmans was also praised for encouraging its employees to help those in need, and for paying them for their volunteer efforts.

Wegmans operates 106 supermarkets in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, Massachusetts and North Carolina.

Five other retailers made the “100 Companies That Care” list. They included Publix (#22), Target (27), Nugget Markets (42), Burlington (62) and Dick’s Sporting Goods (96).
