See what the hourly wages are at Philly supermarkets

With Lidl’s recent announcement that it plans to raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour in several cities including Philadelphia, billypenn.com published an article last week that outlined what other grocery chains inside Philadelphia’s city limits are currently paying.

Target – Last spring the company announced that frontline workers would get $15 per hour plus a small bonus for working during the pandemic, and in June the wage hike became permanent.

Whole Foods – The Amazon-owned chain raised base pay to $15 per hour in late 2018.

Giant – According to Company Spokesperson Ashley Flower, Giant is Pennsylvania’s second largest private employer. Although she wouldn’t comment on Giant’s base pay, self-reported data on Glassdoor indicates that the chain pays cashiers about $10 per hour, and about $11 per hour for deli, produce, bakery and overnight associates. Flower did say that Giant’s employment package includes paid time off and education reimbursement.

ShopRite and Fresh Grocer – Both banners are part of the Wakefern cooperative, and employees are represented by a union. Online wage reporting sites like Glassdoor and Indeed show ShopRite’s hourly base pay at about $9 for front end associates and about $10 for cashiers. The data shows that wages are less at Fresh Grocer.

Save A Lot – Self-reported figures from Glassdoor and Indeed show that hourly sales associates make about $9 per hour. The hourly wages range from about $8 for a stocker and up to $17 for an assistant store manager.

Acme Markets – According to Indeed and PayScale, Acme sales associates make less than $9 an hour on average. Baggers start at less than $8, while the average hourly pay for cashiers is just under $11.

Trader Joe’s – Self-reported wage sites indicate that the hourly pay for a “crew member” is about $16 – $18. Warehouse workers make about $11 an hour, cashiers make about $13, and an assistant manager makes about $30.

Aldi – Hourly wages range from about $13 for a sales associate and up to $27 for an assistant manager, according to Indeed.

Cousins Supermarket – Owner Alex Ibrahim told billypenn.com that the starting pay is $9 an hour for front-end workers like cashiers and $10 for stockers.

Sprouts Farmers Market – The average cashier salary is about $11 an hour, according to PayScale.
