Price Chopper to merge with Tops Markets

Price Chopper and Tops Markets announced last week that they plan to merge and create a chain with nearly 300 supermarkets in six states. The new parent company will have more than 30,000 employees and be based in Schenectady, NY, with Price Chopper President and CEO Scott Grimmett serving as CEO.

Tops is currently based in Williamsville, NY, a suburb of Buffalo. Frank Curci, its chairman and CEO, will serve on the combined company’s board and as a consultant to aid in the transition.

Both companies expect the merger to be completed in the coming months, pending regulatory approval.

Price Chopper operates 130 Price Chopper and Market 32 grocery stores, and one Market Bistro in New York, Vermont, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Tops Markets has 162 supermarkets in New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont.
