US online grocery sales total $8.1 billion in November

US online grocery sales totaled $8.1 billion in November, according to a Brick Meets Click / Mercatus grocery shopping survey. Monthly sales have remained above $8 billion since May, led by grocery delivery and pickup services, which generated $5.9 billion, or 73% of November’s online sales.

“Concerns about contracting the virus, stay-at-home orders or retail restrictions motivated many to try a service within the last nine months, and now a significant share of those households considers online shopping a desirable alternative to an in-store trip,” said Brick Meets Click’s David Bishop. “This presents opportunities as well as threats to established business models and practices.”

For November, 83% of shoppers who actively use online delivery or pickup services said they are extremely or very likely to use the most recent service again within the next 30 days. That’s an increase of eight percent versus August 2020, and up 40 percent compared to March 2020.
