Northeast PA Chain Gerrity’s Supermarkets joins Wakefern Cooperative

Gerrity’s Supermarkets, a 10-unit chain based in Scranton, PA, has joined Wakefern Food Corp., the retail grocery cooperative that includes the ShopRite, Price Rite, and The Fresh Grocer banners, among others. According to reports, plans call for the Northeast PA supermarket to transition over the next few months to Gerrity’s The Fresh Grocer. Gerrity’s is Wakefern’s 48th member.

Once the conversion takes place, The Fresh Grocer will expand from 11 to 21 supermarkets, all in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Gerrity’s was founded in 1895 as a small meat market and it became a supermarket in 1980. The company now has 1,300 employees. The retailer’s operations also include three Ace Hardware stores.

Overall, Wakefern has 360 stores in nine states, with 280 of them under the ShopRite banner.
