Earlier this month Lidl announced that it plans to acquire six Shoppers Food & Pharmacy locations from United Natural Foods Inc. Five of the stores are in Maryland and one is in Virginia.
Shoppers currently has 43 stores but expects to be down to 26 after additional deals with other grocery chains and operators.
In addition, it was reported last Monday that Lidl sees the opportunity for up to 50 stores in Long Island, NY. Earlier this year the company acquired 24 Best Market supermarkets on Long Island, and three of them have already re-opened under the Lidl banner. They expect to have eight of the stores open by summer 2020, and expect to have all of them open within the next two years.
According to Lidl US Communications Director William Harwood, “We could envision over 50 stores here.”
