Lidl CEO confirms “several dozen” stores coming to America in 2018

Lidl CEO Sven Seidel recently told a German newspaper that “the United States are a strategic market for us. We will launch there with several dozen stores.”

Seidel said stores would open in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland and Washington DC. According to regional real estate brokers, deals have also been made in Pennsylvania.

Plans call for Lidl’s American stores to have a slightly higher product range in more attractive stores, as compared to the chain’s current European lineup. However, they plan to maintain their discount nature by having smaller product ranges at lower prices.

Prior to its American launch, Lidl plans to invest 2.1 billion euro into its British expansion. The chain currently has 620 stores in Great Britain and plans to add 880 more by 2018.
