Giant Food Stores is planning a two-story, 65,000 square foot supermarket at Riverwalk, a mixed-use development under construction on the Schuylkill River along 23rd Street in Center City, Philadelphia. The store, which will have an outdoor terrace and indoor parking, will be located in a building that will include 291 apartments. It is expected to open in the fall of 2020.
The announcement follows the opening of the company’s second Heirloom Market in Philadelphia, a 10,000 square foot store in University City. The first Heirloom Market opened earlier this year in the Graduate Hospital section of Philadelphia. Two more Philadelphia markets are planned, in Queen Village and Northern Liberties.
The first floor of the new Giant market at Riverwalk will only be about 5,000 square feet, so nearly all the shopping will take place on the second floor.
Giant and ShopRite are the dominant traditional supermarkets in the Greater Philadelphia Region.
