Speaking about the conversion of 16 Genuardi’s stores to Giant supermarkets in a recent interview with Supermarket News, Ahold USA COO Carl Schlicker said he anticipates that “from the time we’re able to start we’ll have them converted within three weeks.”
He explained the general strategy for the stores as returning to “some of the basic tenets that made Genuardi’s what it was in the past.” In addition, the company would bring “some of the technology and things we know about the market from Giant.”
Giant’s market share is sure to rise dramatically with the addition of 16 stores in Southeastern Pennsylvania, and more acquisitions may be coming – in near and distant markets – now that Ahold is “more ready to take a geographic leap than in the past.”
