New Jersey’s Casino Reinvestment Develop Authority, which is trying to bring a supermarket to Atlantic City, voted in late August to designate Village Supermarkets as the developer and operator of a 40,000 square foot store near the city’s convention center.
Village Supermarkets owns and operates 30 ShopRite stores in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Maryland.
According to Matthew Doherty, the development authority’s president, one-third of the 38,000 Atlantic City residents live under the poverty line and have limited access to a regular provider of high quality food. Discount grocer Save-A-Lot is the only other chain grocer in the city.
A four-acre site has been designated for the supermarket and plans call for the land to be rented to Village Supermarkets for $1 a year.
