Amazon cutting jobs at Fresh grocery stores

Amazon cutting jobs at Fresh grocery stores

According to a CNBC report, Amazon is reorganizing its grocery store operations, resulting in job cuts at Fresh stores. And The Washington Post says those job cuts are in the hundreds.

“Like any retailer, we periodically assess our stores’ organizational needs and make decisions to increase efficiencies for our employees and deliver customer value,” said Amazon spokesperson Jessica Martin in a statement to CNBC.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has been vocal about pausing Fresh expansion plans and working to cut costs. He said earlier in the year that a set of experiments and concepts are being worked on across a number of Amazon Fresh stores, and the hope is to eventually continue with an expansion strategy. However, so far this year Amazon has closed stores and eliminated positions.

Currently there are 44 Amazon Fresh stores in eight states and Washington, D.C.
