Aldi to add 150 U.S. stores this year

Aldi announced yesterday that it plans to add about 150 new stores in the U.S. this year after opening about 100 stores in 2020 and 2021. And tomorrow the discount grocer plans to open its first location in Louisiana, making it Aldi’s 38th state. Several more store openings in the Gulf Coast are planned for later in the year.

Last February Aldi broke ground on a distribution center in Loxley, Alabama, its 26th regional distribution center in the U.S. According to plans the center will eventually supply as many as 100 new stores in Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and the Florida Panhandle.

Aldi is in the midst of a $3.4 billion plan announced in June 2017 to expand to 2,500 stores nationwide by the end of 2022. The expansion plan followed a $1.6 billion store refresh project launched earlier that same year that called for the remodeling or expansion of 1,300 stores by the end of 2020.

The company currently operates more than 2,100 U.S. stores.
