The Supermarket News (SN) annual list of the Top 50 food and grocery retailers was released earlier this month. The data, compiled by SN and its research partner IGD, includes sales figures based on public company records, company-provided information, and IGD / SN estimates.
The Top 50 list (by sales) includes seven companies with more than $100 billion in total sales, led by Walmart at $466.8 billion and followed by Amazon ($279.8 billion), Costco ($141.4), Kroger ($137.9) and Walgreens ($112). Target ($104.6) and CVS ($100.1) round out the $100 billion club.

Some SN takeaways from 2021-2022 grocery retail sales:
- Sales gains for the grocery retail/wholesale sector came in smaller for 2021 as companies cycled historic prior-year growth from pandemic-fueled customer demand.
- Food-at-home demand remained strong since the pandemic lasted longer than expected.
- Inflation played an increasing role in grocery sales figures starting in the second half of 2021, as 12-month growth in the food-at-home Consumer Price Index rose steadily.
- Top grocery retailers by store count include Dollar General (18,130), Dollar Tree (16,077), 7-Eleven (14,000), CVS (9,940), Alimentation Couche-Tard (9,857), Walgreens (8,965), Walmart (5,342), Kroger (2,726), Rite Aid (2,450), and Loblaw Cos. (2,438).
- Amazon will top Walmart as the largest U.S. retailer by 2024, according to industry analysts.
