Giant to shut down outdated stores in Abington, Bryn Mawr

Giant announced today that it will shut down two Philadelphia area stores in October. The Giant supermarket on York Road in Abington will close on October 8, and FoodSource in Bryn Mawr, which is owned by Giant, will close on October 22. Giant President Rick Herring reasoned that both stores are outdated.

The press release stated there is a newer, more modern Giant supermarket in Willow Grove, which is less than two miles from the Abington location. In addition, there are “several larger and more modern stores offering more selection within a five-mile radius” of FoodSource in Bryn Mawr.

The Giant in Abington is less than 36,000 feet, and neither one of the stores slated to close operates a pharmacy.

Giant says it has no plans to close additional stores.
