Kroger, the nation’s largest traditional grocery retailer (Kroger, Ralph’s, Fred Meyer and many more brands), reported total sales, including fuel, increased 11% to $27.5 billion in the first quarter of fiscal 2011 as compared to the same period last year. Total sales excluding fuel were up 4.8%.
Perhaps even more remarkable is the fact that these results mark the 30th consecutive quarter of same store supermarket increases for Kroger.
So, should they consider entering the Greater Philadelphia market some day? Perhaps by buying a struggling brand? Although it would be nice to have another Giant-like store in the area, my guess is they will not, as our market is over-stored and may pose too much of a risk for such a successful operator.
